Applying to the programme

STP 2018 applications are now closed
Please note that due to essential maintenance Oriel will be unavailable on: 21 May 2018 between 0700 - 1200 (BST).

We recommend that applicants read through all the recruitment guidance pages before accessing Oriel. You should then follow these steps to help you through the application process for the STP. These steps can be used for both direct entry and in-service applications, which are both made via the online application portal. Most applicants will need to apply to the direct entry vacancy should they feel they meet the eligibility as outlined in the person specification. The in-service vacancy is only for those applicants whose employer have a commissioned post as agreed with Health Education England's local team and lead commissioner, and are nominated by their employer and will be working in the department of the specialism they want to train in.

Contact regarding applications will be via direct messaging through Oriel. We therefore advise applicants to log into their Oriel account regularly throughout the recruitment process. The School recruitment office will send any email notifications to an applicants stated email address. However these emails should not be relied upon as delivery cannot be guaranteed as they are being sent outside of Oriel. We also recommend that you regularly check your spam folder.

Step 1 - Register on the online application portal, Oriel

  • From the Oriel homepage please select the staff group 'healthcare science'.
  • Create your Oriel user account via the 'account registration' option. You can create your account as early as you like but you will only be able to apply once the vacancy goes live.
  • After your have created your user account, fill in some personal details via the 'proceed to applicant registration' option. This will save you some time when completing your application as the information you enter is used to automatically populate parts of your form. If you don't do this you can still apply for a vacancy but you will need to enter your personal details during your application.

Please do not have Oriel open in more than one tab within a single browser. Doing so will cause accidental data changes to be made when a save occurs in one of these tabs. We would also like to recommend that users access Oriel through Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer 11 or Internet Explorer Edge).

Browser product Version
Blackberry >=6
Apple Safari >=7
Google Chrome >=30
Microsoft Internet Explorer 9, 10*
Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile 11

Step 2 - Search for a vacancy

  • Login to Oriel
  • Click on the vacancies tab and under 'specialty' select Scientist Training Programme, next under 'post type' select healthcare science. Make sure you select the correct post type as there will be two to choose from; one for the direct entry and one for the in-service entry. The 'healthcare science' tab is for direct entry applicants and the 'healthcare science in service' tab is for in service applicants (already working for the NHS and have been nominated by your current employer).
  • In-service applicants will be sent a code from their employer which you will need to complete your application form.
  • Direct entry applicants do not require a code for their application.

Step 3 - Check the opening and closing dates

  • The application opening and closing dates will be published when the STP opens for the 2018 intake.

Step 4 - Complete your application and choose your preferred specialism

  • Your application will require personal, academic, work experience, employment and equality and diversity details. You will also be required to complete a set of questions to demonstrate your suitability, understanding and motivation for applying to the programme.
  • Direct entry applications will need to choose their preferred specialism (and/or themes for clinical engineering, medical physics and infection science). Preferred post locations will only be chosen if invited to interview or if on interview reserved list.
  • In-service applications do not have to choose a location or specialism as you are only eligible to apply for the post that is being sponsored by your current employer. You will have to provide evidence that your employer has given permission for you to apply to the programme and you will also have to email copies of your academic qualifications eg. a degree certificate to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before the closing date. If you answer 'yes' to any of the 'Fitness to practise' questions you will also need to send supporting information to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before the closing date. Make sure that you answer these questions correctly as your application could be rejected if any answers are wrong.
  • After you have submitted your application you will be sent details on how to access and complete the online apitutude tests via the 'my applications' in Oriel. These do not have to be done straight after submitting your application but you must complete them before the relevant closing date published on this website.

Applying for special circumstances

If you wish to be considered for special circumstances pre allocation, you must state this on your application form. You then need to send the relevant application form for either criterion 1 or 2 (see links below) together with supporting evidence by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Requests for consideration of special circumstances received in any other way will not be accepted. There are two criteria that you can consider when applying for special circumstances:

  • Criterion 1 – the applicant is the primary carer for someone who is disabled, as defined by the Equality Act 2010.
  • Criterion 2 – the applicant has a medical condition or disability for which ongoing follow up for the condition in the specified location is an absolute requirement.

Further information about applying for special circumstances is available in the Guidance for Applicants PDF.

Step 5 - Practice the online aptitude tests

  • The online aptitude tests will assess your numerical and logical reasoning abilities.
  • Before taking your aptitude tests, take advantage of some practice tests that are available at This will help prepare you for what's involved and give yourself the best chance of doing well in the final tests. You can use these practice tests as many times as you like.

Step 6 - Complete the final aptitude tests before the closing date

  • Direct entry applicants must complete their final aptitude tests before the published closing date.
  • In-service applicants must complete their final aptitude tests before the published closing date.
  • You can access the online tests via the 'my applications' in Oriel. This will only appear once your application has been submitted.
  • Before you begin there will be an initial untimed practice session; once you leave this session your final tests will start. There will be time limits for each question and the tests must be completed in one sitting; you cannot stop part way through or go back to the beginning.
  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection and before you begin close any browser tabs, windows and applications that you do not need.
  • Do not click on the back button or refresh the page during the tests as this will cause no marks to be awarded.
  • Once you have completed your tests check that it shows 'completed' before logging out.
  • Failure to complete the tests before the deadline dates above will result in your application being rejected.
  • There is a minimum pass mark for each test, if you do not meet this pass mark then your application will not proceed any further.
  • If you pass the online tests you will be put forward for shortlisting.

What to do if you require extra time to complete the tests

If you require extra time to complete the aptitude tests you will need to send evidence to support your request to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Make sure that you send this evidence at least 3 working days before the aptitude tests deadline date. The recruitment team will review your evidence and facilitate the extra time required if it is granted. If you fail to notify the team before the deadline date, you may not be granted the extra time you need.

What happens next?

If your test score is within the required threshold for the programme your application will be put forward for shortlisting. However if your score is below the threshold then you will be notified that your application will not progress any further.
