Applying to the programme

Applications to the STP are now closed
Please note that Oriel will be unavailable during the following times: Thursday 25 July 2019 between 08:00 - 13:00

Before submitting your application

Before you submit your STP application, take the time to read through the information in this section including the guidance documents in the 'Important documents' section. The information and guidance available will help you understand the application process better and make sure that you do not miss any important deadlines.

When to do your application

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to complete/submit your application form and aptitude tests. Don't leave this until the last minute in case you encountered any problems. The School cannot guarantee that all queries will be answered during the last 48 hours of the application window. Data from the last four years of applications to the STP has shown that applicants who leave completion too late, sometimes end up missing the deadline for submissions entirely and are unable to apply to the programme.

The steps below will help you through the application process for the STP. These steps are applicable for both direct entry and in-service applications, which are both made via the online application portal. You can also read the application guidance for further information on applying to the STP.

Step 1 - Register on the online application portal, Oriel

  • Create your Oriel user account via the 'not a registered user' option. You can create your account as early as you like but you will only be able to apply once the vacancy goes live.
  • After you have created your user account, fill in some personal details via the 'proceed to applicant registration' option. This will save you some time when completing your application as the information you enter is used to automatically populate parts of your form. If you don't do this you can still apply for a vacancy but you will need to enter your personal details during your application.

Please do not have Oriel open in more than one tab within a single browser. Doing so will cause accidental data changes to be made when a save occurs in one of these tabs. We would also like to recommend that users access Oriel through Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer 11 or Internet Explorer Edge).

Technical requirements needed to access Oriel

Browser product Version
Blackberry >=6
Apple Safari >=7
Google Chrome >=30
Microsoft Internet Explorer 9, 10*
Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile 11
Microsoft Edge all
Mozilla Firefox 24-26*

Step 2 - Search for a vacancy

  • Login to Oriel
  • Click on the vacancies tab and under 'specialty' select Scientist Training Programme, next under 'post type' select healthcare science. Make sure you select the correct post type as there will be two to choose from; one for the direct entry and one for the in-service entry. The 'healthcare science' tab is for direct entry applicants and the 'healthcare science in service' tab is for in service applicants (already working for the NHS and have been nominated by your current employer with confirmation of a funded post).
  • In-service applicants will be sent a code from their employer which you will need to complete your application form. Only applicants already working in the NHS that have a funded post and have been nominated by their employer, can apply to this vacancy.
  • Direct entry applicants do not require a code for their application.

Step 3 - Check the opening and closing dates

  • The application opening and closing dates will be published when the STP opens for the 2019 intake.

Step 4 - Complete your application and choose your post location and preferred specialism

  • Your application will require personal, academic, work experience, employment and equality and diversity details. You will also be required to complete a set of questions to demonstrate your suitability, understanding and motivation for applying to the programme.
  • Direct entry applicants will need to choose their preferred training post location and specialism (and/or themes for clinical engineering, medical physics and infection science). The availability of posts may change during the application period so make sure you check the School website on a regular basis for any updates. You have a maximum choice of two specialisms/themes but you can choose multiple locations/employers as is available in your preferred subject. If any of the questions refer to your chosen specialism and you have chosen more than one, use the space provided to answer for both specialisms.
  • In-service applicants do not have to choose a location or specialism as you are only eligible to apply for the post that is being sponsored by your current employer. However at the appropriate time in the process, you will be emailed asking you to confirm on Oriel your employing organisation. You will have to provide evidence that your employer has given permission for you to apply to the programme and you will also have to email copies of your academic qualifications e.g. a degree certificate to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before the closing date. If you answer 'yes' to any of the 'Fitness to practise' questions you will also need to send supporting information to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before the closing date. Make sure that you answer these questions correctly as your application could be rejected if any answers are wrong.
  • After you have submitted your application you will be sent details on how to access and complete the online aptitude tests via the 'my applications' in Oriel. Your online test link may not appear straight away. This just means that the system’s data refresh has not yet taken place. If you experience this then all you need to do is check back approximately one hour after application submission, please do not try and contact us regarding this as we can not guarantee a response between now and the deadline.

Step 5 - Practice the online aptitude tests

  • The online aptitude tests will assess your numerical and logical reasoning abilities.
  • Before taking your aptitude tests, take advantage of some practice tests that are available at This will help prepare you for what's involved and give yourself the best chance of doing well in the final tests. You can use these practice tests as many times as you like. You can identify the practice tests by the text on the page; please see the example below.

  • Before commencing your final aptitude test please make sure you have exited the practice section and all open browsers and additional tabs are closed. You must make sure that you are in the correct section before commencing your final test for submission.

Step 6 - Complete the final aptitude tests before the closing date

  • Direct entry applicants must complete their final aptitude tests before the published closing date.
  • In-service applicants must complete their final aptitude tests before the published closing date.
  • You can access the online tests via the 'my applications' in Oriel. This will only appear once your application has been submitted.
  • Before you begin there will be an initial untimed practice session; once you leave this session your final tests will start. There will be time limits for each question and the tests must be completed in one sitting; you cannot stop part way through or go back to the beginning.
  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection and before you begin close any browser tabs, windows and applications that you do not need.
  • Do not click on the back button or refresh the page during the tests as this will cause no marks to be awarded.
  • Once you have completed your tests check that it shows 'completed' before logging out.
  • Failure to complete the tests before the deadline dates above will result in your application being rejected.
  • There is a minimum pass mark for each test, if you do not meet this pass mark then your application will not proceed any further.
  • If you pass the online tests you will be put forward for shortlisting.

What to do if you require extra time to complete the tests

If you require extra time to complete the aptitude tests you will need to send evidence to support your request to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Make sure that you send this evidence at least 3 working days before the aptitude tests deadline date. The recruitment team will review your evidence and facilitate the extra time required if it is granted. If you fail to notify the team before the deadline date, you may not be granted the extra time you need. Please do not start the online tests until the School has reviewed your evidence and if applicable notified you of the extra time.

What happens next?

If your test score is within the required threshold for the programme your application will be put forward for shortlisting. However if your score is below the threshold then you will be notified that your application will not progress any further.
